The Renaissance Period - 3406 Words
The argument being put forward in this dissertation is that the Renaissance in Europe, with specific emphasis on Italy, during the 15th Century, was the most influential period in developing the ââ¬Ëearly modernââ¬â¢ human society. Many believe that this was due to its almost perfect location between Western Europe and the Eastern shore of the Mediterranean. By analysing various factors and sources, as well as different aspects of society, for example political factors and the views of contemporary texts, it will provide enlightening insight into the changes made during the Renaissance period and how these changes are still reverberating. I believe that this question is an important one to study and to answer correctly and accurately because it means that we can trance back the origins of our society today and how it has evolved from, arguably, a more primitive one in terms of breakthroughs and technology. First of all, it is important to understand what the Renaissance period was all about and what it encumbered. The Renaissance period (French: ââ¬ËRebirthââ¬â¢) is a progressive cultural movement that lasted for roughly 3 centuries, from the 14th to the 17th (roughly 1330- 1600), and is often referred to as ââ¬Ëthe bridge between the Middle Ages and a Modern Eraââ¬â¢ (*1). The ââ¬ËRebirthââ¬â¢ of a society, specifically Italy, was recognition of the past but also that it was separate from the present in terms of belief or ideology for example. Public Art Essay Example For Students
Public Art Essay Public art is a piece of art which is created in a public realm to respond to the needs of the community or of a place. It is supposed to address environmental or social issues in the society. Public art reflects the history of the people, or of a place (ââ¬Å"Public art frequently asked questionsâ⬠). The worked is therefore planned and before its execution, collaboration and involvement of the community is very essential as the any art must be significant to the community in which it exists. The relationship between the audience and the art is very much importance even more than the physical location of the art. The publicness of any public work rests entirely on the quality of its impact on the public audience. It must create room for the community engagement by giving them a social idea but allow them to come to their own judgment. The public realm from which the public arts should occupy have in the recent years been extended by artist to even include even more challenging and wider areas for art. This has prompted the society to seek for cultural interventions to implore the artists to engage in art forms which promote societyââ¬â¢s well-being and make good relevant sense of the spaces which they occupy. In the modern days, identity of cities could be summarized on the public art forms and the associated public engagement and are meant to offer pride, sense of celebration, visual appeal, fund and could go further to display the cityââ¬â¢s wealth and health(Fuentes). Public arts such as the monuments and graffiti are allowed in many cities, and some administration even pay for such services but a lot need to be done to ensure that public art make good use of spaces and communicate positive ideas to the community. Due to lack of strict regulations, some city are forced to ban public arts that are either contributing towards draining away the cityââ¬â¢s history or are not communicating anything positive and worth treasuring to the community. In Vandals and scandals, a perfect example of a public art that failed to satisfy the needs of the community is illustrated. This kind of work brought out ill-thoughts from people and hence they hated it. They clearly were never involved in the execution of the project and although it was statute of a famous figure, it demonstrated nothing that the community could be proud of. The artist created a figure with short-skirt which at the same time is blown by wind and exposes the inner side of the artwork (Kevin). All the appeals which the artist achieved by creating the art did not relate to their daily life. The sexual and political appeals are things that the society was not going to be proud of and it had nothing to do with the history. This therefore leaves the art work on the wrong sides of the citizens. It would also be proper to say that the art did not have any message to the public and this may be reason it was viewed as a vandalized public space. It completely wasted the space and it failed to make sense out of the empty public realm. They only thing it achieved was the visual appeal to few people who derives pleasure from such sights but majority were pissed of. Pride, fun and sense of celebration was lacking and hence the art was thrown way from the city by the citizens who preferred to nurture their good history and their pride of their town Public art may be controversial but as long as it has a message or an idea to put through to members of the public then it would certainly be allowed to exist. An example is given of the modern communication statute. It shows a man standing with shoe in his mouth and fingers in his ears. The art work is strategically placed in front of a police station of Kansas City and the fire department. These two are government entities that are mandated to respond to urgent call of the public (Spencer). In most cases these entities fail to act on urgent calls and the statute may be telling their story of see no evil, talk no evil but it could also be saying how communication is broken the modern society. .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 , .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 .postImageUrl , .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 , .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974:hover , .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974:visited , .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974:active { border:0!important; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974:active , .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974 .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u553bff7f807ad4f95067ffdc3bce2974:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Human Rights Regarding Chinese Women EssayThe police and fire department must fix communication between then. The art also add cityââ¬â¢s uniqueness and adds meaning to a city, while at the same time reflect the culture and beliefs of the people living in a city. Government should ensure that they have strict regulations to deter ill-minded artist from using public art in ways that are not recommended.

The Korean War Essays (1304 words) - , Term Papers
The Korean War A cry rang out, June 24, 1950, from a small country half way around the world and America listened. Korea was engaged in a civil war as an attempt to keep North Korea from thrusting its influence on South Korea. Communist Russia and China were strong supporters of the North, and to keep Communism contained the United States sent troops to the South. Our troops spent years fighting and dying for a country some had never heard of. The irony of this war is that no one really paid attention and its memory withered as well as the memory of the men who fought there. You may ask how this could've happened or how it all came about, and ,yes, there is an answer it just may be a little difficult to explain. Korea's geographical realties affected the conduct of war at the strategic, the operational, and the tactical level. It's strategic location made it a collision point for competing interests of major power throughout the world. As far as the actual land mass, Korea is a country no larger than the state of Kansas. All together, North and South Korea covers an area of 85,246 square miles, and only fifteen percent of that can be considered plains - these are mostly in the southern coastal regions. The United States could not allow its interests in East Asia, particularly Japan, to be placed in jeopardy. It was not the nation of Korea per se but its geographical location that prompted America to intervene in the war. (Sommers, 3-10) The United Nations was greatly concerned with the war in Korea, but it did not have a army to send. Thus, the United States Army made up four fifths of the actual forces sent to Korea. The bulk of the forces sent were placed under the command of General MacArthur. One of the first attempts to drive the North Koreans back was a wise plan divised by MacArthur. He landed his forces from the sea at Inchon and worked his way up the coast. His gamble paid off when his army retook the South Korean capital of Seoul. After this victory the United States questioned whether they should stop at the 38th parallel or go beyond it and try to recapture North Korea. They decided to go on. After the 38th was crossed putting the US and South Korean forces in the North , China threatened to send troops in to defend North Korea. After many deliberations the United States decided to continue on. As they said they would, China stepped into the war and drove the Southerners back sixty miles below the 38th parallel, recapturing Seoul. (Boorstin and kelley, 723-726) The war was a stalemate. No one side could get the upper hand. Some people questioned whether this would evolve into World War III. Peace negotiations seemed hopeless because the North refused to compromise and so they closed the negotiations. The United States had no choice but to use their last alternative. They threatened to bomb China and to use atomic bombs on Korea. These threats reopened the peace negotiations. Three years, one month, and two days later the war ended. Cease-fire came at 10:00 P.M., and an armistice was signed by North Korea and the United Nations on July 27, 1953. (Boorstin and Kelley, 723-726) The Korean War was the first American war ever waged that was not fought for national survival, for territory, for Manifest Destiny, or for hegemony. This was also an ideological war. For the first time in the nations history Americans were asked to fight and die to contain an idea. The Korea War ended in an ambiguous victory, that was purchased dearly. The United States spent sixty-seven billion dollars on this one war. With that amount of money we could have traveled to the moon and back two and a half times. (At the cost of our first excursion to the moon.) They war was also purchased with the blood of millions. Soldiers and civilians alike on both sides of the battle gave their lives for what they believed in and some had no idea what was going on until it was too late.

Battle of Hobkirks Hill in the American Revolution
Battle of Hobkirk's Hill in the American Revolution Battle of Hobkirks Hill - Conflict Date: The Battle of Hobkirks Hill was fought April 25, 1781, during the American Revolution (1775-1783). Armies Commanders Americans Major General Nathanael Greene1,551 men British Lord Rawdon900 men Battle of Hobkirks Hill - Background: Having won a costly engagement against Major General Nathanael Greenes army at the Battle of Guilford Court House in March 1781, Lieutenant General Lord Charles Cornwallis paused to rest his weary men. Though he initially wished to pursue the retreating Americans, his supply situation would not allow for further campaigning in the region. As a result, Cornwallis elected to move towards the coast with the goal of reaching Wilmington, NC. Once there, his men could be re-provisioned by sea. Learning of Cornwallis actions, Greene cautiously followed the British east until April 8. Turning south, he then pressed into South Carolina with the goal of striking at British outposts in the interior and reclaiming area for the American cause. Hampered by a lack of food, Cornwallis let the Americans go and trusted that Lord Francis Rawdon, who commanded around 8,000 men in South Carolina and Georgia, could deal with the threat. Though Rawdon did lead a large force, the bulk of it consisted of Loyalist units which were scattered across the interior in small garrisons. The largest of these forces numbered 900 men and was based at his headquarters in Camden, SC. Crossing the border, Greene detached Lieutenant Colonel Henry Light Horse Harry Lee with orders to unite with Brigaider General Francis Marion for a combined attack on Fort Watson. This combined force succeeded in carrying the post on April 23. As Lee and Marion conducted their operation, Greene sought to strike at the heart of the British outpost line by attacking Camden. Moving quickly, he hoped to catch the garrison by surprise. Arriving near Camden on April 20, Greene was disappointed to find Rawdons men on alert and the towns defenses fully manned. Battle of Hobkirks Hill - Greenes Position: Lacking sufficient men to besiege Camden, Green retreated a short distance north and occupied a strong position on Hobkirks Hill, approximately three miles south of the Camden battlefield where Major General Horatio Gates had been defeated the previous year. It was Greenes hope that he could draw Rawdon out of the Camden defenses and defeat him in open battle. As Greene made his preparations, he dispatched Colonel Edward Carrington with most of the armys artillery to intercept a British column that was reportedly moving to reinforce Rawdon. When the enemy did not arrive, Carrington received orders to return to Hobkirks Hill on April 24. The next morning, an American deserter incorrectly informed Rawdon that Greene had no artillery. Battle of Hobkirks Hill - Rawdon Attacks: Responding to this information and concerned that Marion and Lee might reinforce Greene, Rawdon began making plans to attack the American army. Seeking the element of surprise, the British troops skirted west bank of Little Pine Tree Creek swamp and moved through wooded terrain to avoid being spotted. Around 10:00 AM, British forces encountered the American picket line. Led by Captain Robert Kirkwood, the American pickets put up stiff resistance and allowed Greene time to form for battle. Deploying his men to meet the threat, Greene placed Lieutenant Colonel Richard Campbells 2nd Virginia Regiment and Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Hawes 1st Virginia Regiment on the American right while Colonel John Gunbys 1st Maryland Regiment and Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Fords 2nd Maryland Regiment formed the left. As these forces took position, Greene held the militia in reserve and instructed Lieutenant Colonel William Washington to take his command of 80 dragoons around the British right to attack their rear. Battle of Hobkirks Hill - The American Left Collapses: Moving forward on a narrow front, Rawdon overwhelmed the pickets and forced Kirkwoods men to fall back. Seeing the nature of the British attack, Greene sought to overlap Rawdons flanks with his larger force. To accomplish this, he directed the 2nd Virginia and 2nd Maryland to wheel inward to attack the British flanks while ordering the 1st Virginia and 1st Maryland to advance. Reacting to Greenes orders, Rawdon brought up the Volunteers of Ireland from his reserve to extend his lines. As the two sides neared, Captain William Beatty, commanding the right-most company of the 1st Maryland, fell dead. His loss caused confusion in the ranks and the regiments front began to break. Rather than press on, Gunby halted the regiment with the goal of reforming the line. This decision exposed the flanks of the 2nd Maryland and 1st Virginia. To make the situation on the American left worse, Ford soon fell mortally wounded. Seeing the Maryland troops in disarray, Rawdon pressed his attack and shattered the 1st Maryland. Under pressure and without its commander, the 2nd Maryland fired a volley or two and began falling back. On the American right, Campbells men began to fall apart leaving Hawes troops as the only intact American regiment on the field. Seeing that the battle was lost, Greene directed his remaining men to retreat north and ordered Hawes to cover the withdrawal. Circling around the enemy, Washingtons dragoons approached as the fighting was ending. Joining the battle, his horsemen briefly captured around 200 of Rawdons men before assisting in evacuating the American artillery. Battle of Hobkirks Hill - Aftermath: Departing the field, Greene moved his men north to the old Camden battlefield while Rawdon elected to fall back to his garrison. A bitter defeat for Greene as he had invited battle and been confident of victory, he briefly thought about abandoning his campaign in South Carolina. In the fighting at the Battle of Hobkirks Hill Green lost 19 killed, 113 wounded, 89 captured, and 50 missing while Rawdon sustained 39 killed, 210 wounded, and 12 missing. Over the next few weeks both commanders reassessed the strategic situation. While Greene elected to persevere with his operations, Rawdon saw that many of his outposts, including Camden, were becoming untenable. As a result, he began a systematic withdrawal from the interior which resulted in British troops being concentrated at Charleston and Savannah by August. The following month, Greene fought the Battle of Eutaw Springs which proved the last major engagement of the conflict in the South.

Being Left at Home or Being Sent to War Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Being Left at Home or Being Sent to War - Essay Example According to Crane (28), despite the honor and heroism that comes with being sent to war, the army life was filled with horrors and rigors. This paper argues that it is more difficult to be sent to war than to be left at home. During wartimes such as the American civil war when many young Americans were faced with the dilemma of either being left at home or sent to war (Heiser 87). Many Americans particularly came to this realization that being sent to war is not romantic as they had previously thought after the American Civil War. Billings (56) suggests that one of the greatest difficulties faced by people who were left at home during war times was the fear of being seen as a coward. For example, throughout the civil war, the motivation of joining the army rather than being left at home is rather than being left at home is primarily driven by the instinct of self preservation and the desire to be seen as courageous like a classical Greek hero (Wiley 102). On the other hand, according to Crane (5), many parents and communities actually wanted their children to be sent to war and fight due to the heroism and honor attached to being in the battlefield even though being sent to war so often meant death. ââ¬Å"I do not know what else to tell yeh, Henry, except that yeh must never do any shirking, child, on my accountâ⬠(Crane 6). Although Henryââ¬â¢s mother was at first reluctant to allow his son enlist in the army, she advices him to meet his responsibilities and never to bring her shame even if it costs his life. ââ¬Å"The line soon encountered a body of a dead soldier laying upon his back and staring at the sky. The corpse was dressed in an awkward brown suit and the youth could see that the soles of his shoes had been worn to the thinness of writing paper. Death exposed to his enemies the poverty which in life he may had concealed from his friendsâ⬠(Crane 23).

Transcendental Deduction Essay Example for Free
Transcendental Deduction Essay Kantââ¬â¢s Transcendental Deduction of the categories of the analytic concepts presents an analysis of the mental activities as well as the analysis of knowledge and self.à Kant discussed these mental activities using two sets of terms such as manifold representations and intuition as well as understanding and sensibility (p.76). à à à à à à à à à à à Representation to him means the various concepts pulling together into unity and can be given in an intuition that is merely sensible.à For Kant, intuition means a perception or knowledge (a priore) or insight. à Kant associated knowledge to intuition and also to perception (p.82).à He said, ââ¬Å"The pure concepts of understanding even when they are applied to a priori intuition provide knowledge only to the extent that these are priori intuition, and through them, the concept of understanding is applied also.à He further noted that ââ¬Å"empirical intuition serves only for the possibility of empirical knowledge. Sensible on the other hand, means either having or demonstrating sound reason and judgment or able to be perceived through the senses.à Synthesis is the result of combination, a process of combining different ideas, influences or objects into a new whole.à In view of transcendental deduction of Kant, the combination of concepts is act of ââ¬Å"active departmentâ⬠of understanding which disguised it from the passive department which he called sensibility.à He concludes this statement that ââ¬Å"all combining is an action of the understanding whether or not we are conscious of itâ⬠(p.75).à Kant further discussed the understanding self using another set of terminology. à à à à à à à à à à à The ââ¬Å"I thinkâ⬠which refers to that something was represented that could not be thought at all; He introduced three bits of terminology in order for us to grasp of the self-awareness (p76), that is expressed in the representation ââ¬Å"I think.â⬠à These three bits about self-awareness according to Kant are: (1) the pure self-awareness which presupposed by all thought and intuition; (2) the basic self-awareness which is the self-consciousness that produces the representation of the ââ¬Å"I think;â⬠(3) Transcendental which is the unity of self-awareness. Clarifying the Aim of Transcendental Deduction of the Categories of the Analytical Concepts à à à à à à à à à à à Kantââ¬â¢s aim of transcendental deduction is to seek to generalize what he has said about self-awareness to all conceptual thinking.à The author pointed out that what Kant must have meant is that, ââ¬Å"a property combines with other propertiesâ⬠or that a ââ¬Å"representation of a property combines with the representation.â⬠à This according to him, Kant infers about analysis is being possible if there has previously been synthesis. In the discussion of analytic concept, Kant used such terms as I, I think, I can, I couldnââ¬â¢t do it.à He said that each of this representation is accompanied with consciousness that when combined with different representation can on finally say ââ¬Å"I canâ⬠that means he is now aware of the intended action or he calls it ââ¬Å"self-awareness.à In his discussion of synthesis, he said that it is an act of the mind.à Here, what he meant is act of mentally combining distinct intentional representations. Important Argumentative Elements à à à à à à à à à à à à The first argumentative element about transcendental deduction is that, our concept about an object is associated with self awareness.à The mind must have representations of that concept to make it pure concept.à In my own interpretation, this representation could be experiences that connect representation of concept, since self has one identity.à Therefore, all other perception must be belonging to one consciousness or attributing to one identity in which the central grip is the self-employed knowledge. In this sense, we can conclude that the self identifies object based on consciousness and awareness.à Usually, the experiences help shape the selfââ¬â¢s concept of things.à Kant emphasize that there must be a unity of consciousness and self-awareness which underlies the relations of representations to an object, which makes their objective validity and consequently their status as an item of knowledge (p.78).à What he meant by this is that the unity of self consciousness and the synthetic unity of self awareness are the bases for all uses of the understanding and it has nothing to do with any sensible intuition. Kant also emphasized that ââ¬Å"understanding must related through more understanding to objects of intuition (p.83).à In other words, concepts that are not sensible cannot be transformed to reality and cannot be understood.à An act of the understanding results from self-awareness that leads to thinking something that is necessary condition not only for our identity as experiencing minds, but also for anything that is to be an object of sensible intuition (p.83).à These forms of thought of thoughts must come to have objective reality.à In my idea, Kant is discussing these matters for us to understand how our thoughts are formed and come into reality.à The object is self-awareness and self-consciousness of our actions, thoughts, and words. On of the argumentative elements in Kantââ¬â¢s discussion of deduction of pure concepts of understanding that I find is his statement about the multiplicity of intuition which he labeled synthesis.à He said that it reminds us that we cannot represent to ourselves anything as combined in the object unless we ourselves have previously combined it.à I find this statement somehow contradicting in a sense that synthesis is natural work of the mind which we may not be conscious how it is working. He said synthesis is ââ¬Å"mind self activityâ⬠(p.75), and can only be carried out by mind itself.à In this case, it appears that we have no control of this activity.à If what he meant is that we can be aware of all these intuition pure concept and synthesis.à Then, we can guide our thoughts towards right expression of reality.à If this is the case, the expression of self-awareness and self-consciousness would have high effect.à But since this is a mental act, it can only be carried out by the mind itself which we are not conscious.à There I would say that it certainly cannot represent to us anything. Kant presented another interesting discussion of the pure concept and forms of thoughts.à He said that ââ¬Å"pure concept of understanding is related through mere understanding to objects of intuition of any kinds as long as it is sensibleâ⬠(p.103). Here, Kant relates pure concept of understanding with intuition of any kinds as long as it is sensible regardless of the nature of those objects whether they are corrupt or bad character.à He pointed out that because of this application; the intuition become a form of thoughts convey us information about determinate object.à What quite interesting in this is that, he said that pure concept of understanding is related to intuition which is sensible.à The pure concept to intuition is mere forms of thoughts with no determinate object related to intuition which is sensible. Thus, the discussion centers on how our mental faculties are working in so far as to have self-awareness which must be the basis of all these.à Kant pointed out that there is in us a certain basic form of a priori sensible intuition that depends on our passive faculty representation.à What he meant is that we have intuition of space and time which is also the pure intuition.à But this intuition according to Kant is either pure intuition or empirical intuition.à The pure intuition is about space and time while empirical those sensations that immediately represent to us as real in space and time.à Kant noted that ââ¬Å"thing in space and time are given as perceptionâ⬠(p.82). Conclusion à à à à à à à à à à à Kantââ¬â¢s discussion of transcendental deductions was quite very difficult to understand.à But in so far as my understanding is concerned, Kant presented a detailed discussion of how our mental faculties are working towards a formation of thoughts about the self from what he calls manifold representation.à He said that we have basically a priori knowledge yet it needs to be combined to the manifold representations which he calls this combination as synthesis or synthetic unity.à This according to Kant leads to self awareness or self consciousness. à à à à à à à à à à à Kant also discussed pure concept of knowledge which according to him is related to understanding objects of intuition.à Here he discussed that before a concept becomes a thought it has to be identified with intuition of any kinds as long as it is sensible.à In other words, a concept that is identified with sensibility can be concrete and can be grasped. à à à à à à à à à à à But what is important in this discussion is the aim of this presentation.à Kant was able to clarify to us how our mental faculties are working towards the making of mere thoughts and concepts to become words and pure concepts of knowledge to express consciousness and awareness. à à à à à à à à à à à I would say that knowing all these, must help us to be more careful of our self-expression as well as of our attitude in dealing with others.à The transcendental deductions has helped us know our selves, therefore it must help us too in expressing our own selves in the everyday events and circumstances of our lives.
